The Republic of Italy, commonly known as Italy (Italia), is a European sovereign state consisting of the boot-shaped Italian Peninsula in southern Europe and the two Mediterranean islands of Sicily and Sardinia. The country is administratively divided into 20 regions (5 of which are autonomous regions), 110 provinces and 8,100 cities. The capital is Rome, where the Kingdom of Italy set up its capital in 1870, a distinction also held by Turin (1861-1865) and Florence (1865-1870), respectively.
