The assessment consists of four categories: listening, speaking, reading, and writing; Eligible participants are extended to include the entire student body (including graduate students) in the 2004-05 academic year, with assessment consisting of the two categories of listening and reading.

To encourage students to read more, the Lexile Framework for Reading was incorporated from the 2018-19 academic year onwards; Lexile reading measures can be used to evaluate the reading ability of individual readers and the reading difficulty of specific texts, which may assist students, instructors, and parents choose books and articles targeted to the appropriate reading levels.

In accordance with school policy, the Lexile reading assessment is no longer administered after Spring 2022.
